Clubhouses

The 'Pavilion' was a one story building built in the first year of the Club's opening. It looked out over the four original tennis courts. The Pavilion roof can be seen in the centre of this photo, overlooking one of the grass courts.

The tennis courts and the Pavilion are also shown in the photo of Hong Kong harbour, below. The LRC is in the center at the bottom.

A very close look shows the Pavilion had three rounded openings similar to the grand houses that surround the Club in the 1880s.

Only the roof of the Pavilion can be seen in this view (below) facing towards The Peak from Kennedy Road, with the Club's tennis courts on the right.

And here is a similar view, where we we can just see the roof of the Paviliton with the tennis courts of the right.

"Larceny from the Ladies Recreation Club"

China Mail, 20 July, 1885

We first read of the Pavilion in the newspaper - because it was burgled in June of that year.

"On the ... on the 26th the Pavilion of the Ladies' Recreation club had been entered, and a telescope, some knives, tea spoons, table Cloths, &c., stolen."

And the follow up story ...

1915 - the Pavilion was replaced by a two story Clubhouse, which was renamed the "Junior Clubhouse" in 1955

1955 - a new Main Clubhouse was built

In 1963, the "Junior" Clubhouse was taken down to leave an open terrace overlooking the pool, and the "Family Clubhouse was built.

1978 saw the opening of the Sports Clubhouse

2007 the "New" building was opened
