The 'Pavilion' - the first LRC Clubhouse

This is detail of a photo taken from the harbourside looking up toward the LRC c.1890.

China Mail, 2
0 July, 1885

We first read of the Pavilion in the newspaper - because it was burgled in June of that year.

" ... on the 26th the Pavilion of the Ladies' Recreation Club had been entered, and a telescope, some knives, tea spoons, table Cloths, &c., stolen."

Larceny from the
Ladies' Recreation Club

c.1886

The 'Pavilion' which was built within one year of the Club's Opening Day, looked out over the four original tennis courts. The Pavilion roof can be seen in the centre of this photo, overlooking one of the grass courts.

1915 - It is not clear when the The 'Pavilion' was replaced - but 1915 has been suggested. In this postcard the original Pavilion is center lower left.

1947 - The photographer Hedda Morrison came to Hong Kong in 1946-47 and took may photos of the post-war colony. A detail of one shows the grass courts of the LRC overgrown, but the Clubhouse is still standing (left photo).

1948. The Club's courts were back in shape (photo - Pan Am)

1950. A swimming pool appears.

1955
- the Clubhouse was renamed the "Junior Clubhouse" after the new "Main Clubhouse" was built

That brings us up to 1960..
