Lower Tennis Courts
and the Albany Filter Beds

Albany Filter beds - 1951

In 1955 the filter beds and storage resevoir were covered over. The land over the storage tanks were leased by the LRC and three tennis courts laid.

The Tai Tam Reservoir and Aquaduct were constructed from 1882 to 1889 to bring water from the Tai Tam valley to Central and Western districts.

The Tai Tam Reservoir (upper) was built in a valley, about 2 km from the coast and a dam was built at the mouth of the valley to collect rainwater. (a second dam at Tai Tam Tuk was not built until 1912).

A tunnel was driven through the Wong Nai Chung Gap valley and a 5,500-yard brick and stone aqueduct was built (now under Bowen Rd) to connect the Reservoir with the storage tank and filter beds at Albany Road.

The 6 filter beds of the project were situated on the eastern side of the Albany nullah.

After being filtered, water passed through to the storage resevoir at the junction of Garden Road and Bowen Road.
