c. 1869 The Peak and Hong Kong Harbour - showing the original Peak Road

A spectacular view of Hong Kong in the late 1860s. The path meandering up to the Peak was the Peak Road (now Old Peak Rd). The young city of Victoria is developing. The harbour is broad and busy with a great variety of shipping. Stonecutters' Island shows clearly in the middle of the picture. Only a few buildings appear on the Peak but the Peak Signal Station is visible which was built in 1862.

1886 - Hong Kong harbour from the Peak

2008 marks the 125th anniversary of the Ladies' Recreation Club (LRC) which was established in 1883. One of the earliest views of Hong Kong's first tennis club shows neat terraces on the hill above the city in among a verdant blanket of trees. This photograph was taken in1886.
