Mr. Fung plied his trade for many years in
the same spot on the pavement at Old Peak Road at the extreme
northern end of the LRC property.. He communted from his home
in Aberdeen. One day, a truck backed into his workarea and
destroyed all his tools. Mr. Fung himself was not hurt. .Some
Club members saw it happen, took down the truck license number,
and made sure the driver paid for Mr. Fung to get new tools.
After this, Mr. Fung moved his "shop"
back a bit further, off the pavement.
One
day, Mr. Fung got a puppy to keep him company. The little
dog had to stay in a little cage overnight when Mr. Fung went
home, right out in the open. When Mr. Fung was sick at home,
a member, Mrs. Griffiths (perhaps) who lived on Old Peak Rd
would take the dog for a walk. Finally, the she decided that
the cage was too small for the dog. She arranged to have a
shipping container put up so Mr. Fung and the dog would have
an easier life.
Mr.
Fung would take his electricity from the LRC, and when it
was turned off at midnight, Mr. Fung was without. He had no
water connection, so he would get his water in buckets from
the LRC.
In the days before mobile phones, Mrs. Fung
would call Mohamed from Aberdeen and ask him to relay messages
to Mr. Fung.
Mrs. Ellen McNally, our library Convenor
for 2008, always gave Mr. Fung her business when she lived
on Old Peak Rd. many years ago.
Mr. Fung is no longer in good health so he
does not come to work these days - but his "shop"
is still there.
(as told by Mohamed, the LRC parking attendant,
who has worked for the LRC since about 1978 when the car park
first opened.)
